SSC CGL 2026 Tier 1 runs from 30 September to 30 October 2026, and for the first time every section has its own 15-minute timer. You can't choose the order, and you can't go back. What changed in 20262026 में क्या बदला
Until last year, Tier 1 gave you one 60-minute pool for all 100 questions. You could start with your strongest subject, skip around, and come back to anything later.
From the 2026 cycle, SSC has introduced strict sectional timing:
- Each of the four sections gets exactly 15 minutes (20 minutes for candidates eligible for a scribe).
- You can't pick the order of sections or move freely between them.
- Once a section's time is over, it is locked — you can't return to it.
That means 25 questions in 15 minutes: 36 seconds per question, in every section, with no chance to borrow time from a section you find easy.

Tier 1 is qualifying: it decides who moves to Tier 2, and final merit is based on Tier 2. Plan as if time saved in one section will not help you in the next one. Follow the instructions shown on your exam screen, but prepare for the strictest version. Inside each section, use a two-round method:
- Round 1 (about 9–10 minutes): go through all 25 questions. Answer every question you can solve quickly. If a question looks long, mark it for review and move on — don't get stuck.
- Round 2 (about 4–5 minutes): come back to the marked questions and solve the ones you now think you can do.
- Last minute: make educated guesses on questions where you can rule out at least one option (see the guessing maths below). Don't leave time unused — you can't take it with you.

- Round 1: analogy, classification (odd one out), number and letter series, coding-decoding, mirror and water images, embedded figures. These usually take 15–30 seconds each.
- Round 2: seating and scheduling puzzles, syllogism, counting figures, paper folding and cutting.
- Watch out: one long puzzle can eat 3 minutes. If you haven't cracked it in 60 seconds, mark it and move on.

- GA is recall — you either know it or you don't. Answer the ones you're sure of in the first 5–6 minutes.
- Use the remaining time on marked questions with elimination: rule out options that are clearly wrong, then decide.
- Don't change an answer you were sure of unless you remember a specific fact that proves it wrong.

- This is the hardest section to finish in 15 minutes. Aim for high accuracy on the questions you attempt rather than touching all 25.
- Round 1: simplification, percentage, ratio, profit & loss, SI/CI, averages, and direct formula questions in algebra and trigonometry.
- Round 2: geometry, mensuration, time & work, speed & distance, and data interpretation.
- Use options: many questions can be solved faster by checking which option fits than by solving from scratch.

4. English Comprehension4. अंग्रेज़ी बोध
- Round 1: vocabulary — synonyms, antonyms, idioms and phrases, one-word substitution, spelling. Each takes a few seconds.
- Then error spotting, sentence improvement, voice and narration.
- Round 2: cloze test and reading comprehension. Read the questions before the passage so you know what to look for.

What this meansIn SSC Tier 1 the penalty is only a quarter of the reward, so even a blind guess is slightly positive on average. The real gain comes from ruling out one or two options — that's where your last minute of each section should go.

How to practise for sectional timingसेक्शनल टाइमिंग के लिए अभ्यास कैसे करें
- Always use a 15-minute timer per section, even in topic practice. Old full-length mocks without sectional timers train the wrong habit.
- Take full mocks in the exam order, with no breaks between sections.
- After every mock, write down per section: attempts, correct, wrong, and which question wasted the most time.
- Work on your weakest section first. Under the new pattern, one weak section can't be covered by a strong one.
